MAGICAL GARDENS (EXCURSIONS)

preview image

The Magical Gardens series explores the genius loci of selected historic gardens, the stories behind them, and the personalities of their creators and inhabitants. It focuses particularly on those whose atmosphere and uniqueness echo the “wild” garden surrounding the former sculptural studio of Bohumil Kafka—today’s Kafkárna. These gardens are fragile places, often at risk of disappearing altogether, such as the now-vanished Trnka Garden on Turbova Street. The series aims to monitor, research, and draw inspiration from these sites, promoting their positive development and new functions.

Each Magical Gardens event takes the form of a multi-day exploratory journey. Walking plays a central role, serving as a focused movement that allows for deeper insight into the surrounding environment. These journeys foster encounters with living creators and owners of the gardens, as well as with local witnesses and experts. Rather than conventional excursions, they are immersive, experiential paths—preceded by artistic research—designed to engage participants through subtle performances that enhance their perception of the place’s atmosphere. Activities may involve costumes, early morning walks, music, singing, and rituals, all contributing to a heightened sensory and emotional experience.

The series is open to both UMPRUM students and the general public.
